KUALA LUMPUR, June 10: The Ministry of Finance will be leading relevant ministries and agencies to tackle the mushrooming of foreigners illegally running businesses, services and bringing in products that do not meet the regulations into the country, much to the chagrin of local businesses.
Complaints on these businesses, without proper documents or fulfilling local requirements and taking over the opportunities of locals ocuments have been growing in the recent years.
In a press statement today, Deputy Finance Minister Liew Chin Tong said he and the Secretary General of the Treasury Tan Sri Johan Mahmood Merican had met with representatives from the industry and business associations to work on the concern on illegal influx of foreign products, services and businesses.
This has been highlighted by Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Chin Tong said, adding that his ministry will lead relevant ministries and agencies to take a “whole-of-government” approach on the issue with the objectives of ensuring a level playing field for Malaysian companies and industries.
They will also ensure that all business activities fully comply with Malaysian laws and regulations and ensure that all imported products adhere to the relevant stipulated standards, especially for electrical goods, food, and construction materials.
“I thank representatives from the Small and Medium Enterprises Association (SAMENTA) Malaysia, the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM), Federation of Malaysian Manufacturing (FMM), Malaysia Glass Association (PKM) and the Malaysian Wood Moulding & Joinery Council (MWMJC) for their feedback and suggestions.”
The meeting was also joined by the Inland Revenue Board, Royal Malaysian Customs Department, Immigration Department, the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and SIRIM, the statement said.
