IPPT USM’s excellence, recognition puts Malaysia on world stage – Zambry

KEPALA BATAS, July 2: The Higher Education Ministry (MOHE) is proud of the achievements and excellence of the Advanced Medical and Dental Institute (IPPT) at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), which has elevated Malaysia’s status and gained global recognition.

Its minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir said IPPT USM offers medical and dental expertise alongside a range of academic programmes and research in various fields of science and technology.

Established in 2002, IPPT USM has developed into a leading medical centre specialising in oncology, radiotherapy and brachytherapy, particularly for cancers of the head and neck, liver, esophagus and sarcoma.

“The excellence of IPPT USM has captured international attention. BrachyAcademy, a Netherlands-based organisation, has officially declared the institute as a BrachyAcademy Educational Centre of Excellence.

“This recognition is due to IPPT being the only brachytherapy centre that treats a high number of tongue cancer cases using the HyBIRT technique (Hybrid Brachytherapy followed by Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy), making it a global pioneer in this method,” he told reporters after visiting and officiating IPPT USM as a BrachyAcademy Educational Centre of Excellence in Bertam today.

Zambry said IPPT USM has received invitations and requests from international brachytherapy practitioners to undergo fellowship training at the institute since receiving the BrachyAcademy recognition.

He said IPPT USM is currently the only institution in Malaysia to receive this accreditation and has garnered international recognition from Elekta, a Sweden-based leading supplier of radiotherapy equipment and cancer treatment solutions.
