PUTRAJAYA, Jan 23: Greed was not the issue that affected Selangor UMNO’s decision to decline the quota of 20 local council posts offered to them in the state, UMNO President Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.
The Deputy Prime Minister said the decision made by Selangor UMNO ought to be respected.
“I respect their decision to decline the 20-post quota in the state’s local councils…I think they are not disheartened, but just want to play their roles independently and not as members of local councils.
“Greed is a non-issue because we have 22 (UMNO) division chiefs in Selangor. If some were offered, and some were not, it’s better to decline all,” he told reporters after attending an engagement session with the Malaysian Motorcycle Association here today.
Nevertheless, he said UMNO would continue to support the state government’s programmes even without its members being appointed to the local councils.
Prior to this, Selangor UMNO chairman Datuk Megat Zulkarnain Omardin reportedly said that Selangor UMNO would focus on the 373 posts of Village Development and Security Committee chairmen under the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development after rejecting the Pakatan Harapan’s offer of 20 posts in the local councils.
