Geotechnical engineering experts to gather for historic symposium on embankment, soft soils engineering

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 5 – Experts from around the globe in the field of mitigating ground settlements and embankment engineering on soft soils are set to converge on Subang Jaya from 18 – 20 October 2022 for a historic Symposium on Practical Applications of Ground Engineering for Embankments on Soft Soils (GEESS2022) hosted by the Geotechnical Engineering Division of the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM GETD) and managed by IEM Training Academy Sdn Bhd (IEMTA).

The Symposium aims to promote the sharing of scientific knowledge, experience, skills, ideas and achievements in the design, financing, contracting as well as construction, operation, maintenance and rehabilitation of embankments for high-speed transportation facilities.

It also marks the 33rd Anniversary of the Trial Embankments Malaysia at Muar (MTE) which is a Full-Scale Test Embankments Site with over 30 years of settlement records. Efforts are currently underway by Lembaga Lebuhraya Malaysia (LLM) to preserve the MTE site and continue to maintain its monitoring instruments as a World Heritage of Trial Embankments on Soft Clay.

Speaking on the upcoming event, Ir. Dr. Ooi Teik Aun, GEESS2022 organising chairman shared, “The hosting of this symposium is extremely timely, as over 30 years of records on soil settlement in embankments are now available for in-depth analysis and research”.

He added that consequently, the various papers that will be presented during the course of the symposium are aimed at introducing new design and applications for ground engineering techniques and innovations as well as covering various case studies for success under many different ground conditions.

Whether you are an engineer surveyor, consultant, contractor or even a researcher, this symposium is not to be missed and will greatly enrich your understanding of the latest principles, knowledge and ideas in embankments and soft soils engineering.

Spanning the course of 3 days at the Dorsett Grand Subang, in Subang Jaya, the symposium will feature a host of experienced speakers from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan and China as well our local experts, speaking on a range of themes that include but are not limited to, Engineering Geology and Rock Mechanics, Field Testing and Performance Monitoring, Ground Improvement and Stabilization, Shallow and Deep Foundations, Soil Characterization and properties and Ground Improvement techniques and principles.

Aside from these sessions the symposium will include a technical visit to the MTE site itself for up to 120 paid participants on a first-come first-serve basis.

“Soil analysis and geotechnical engineering are extremely important to construction and especially infrastructure construction in Malaysia, thanks to our mixed soil conditions here. I believe therefore that the key learnings available during this symposium will be of vital use to anyone working in construction, surveying, architecture and other related geotechnical fields in Malaysia, the region, and even for worldwide applications,” Ooi said, in closing.
