Four dead after MPV and train collided in Indonesia’s East Java

JAKARTA, May 8 (Bernama) — Four people were reported dead in a fatal accident after a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) and a train collided in Indonesia’s Pasuruan district, East Java, on Tuesday, the police said.

Pasuruan deputy police chief Andria Diana Putra said in a statement on Wednesday that three people died at the scene and one in the hospital, while three injured individuals are currently receiving treatment at the Rejoso Health Centre.

He said the collision occurred when the MPV driver failed to stop at a railway level crossing in Patuguran village, Rejoso sub-district, at about 8.45 am local time on Tuesday.

“Although the railway crossing had a barrier, it had not been activated yet,” Andria added.

PT Kereta Api Indonesia, in a separate statement, assured the safety of all passengers and crew aboard the Jember to Purwokerto train route.

Between January 2023 and March this year, the railway operator reported 414 accidents occurring at level crossings, causing damage to railway facilities, 124 deaths, 87 serious injuries, and 110 minor injuries.
