TOKYO, June 10: Malaysia and Japan have concluded a 20-year LNG sales and purchase agreement between Petronas and JERA, national news agency, BERNAMA reported today.
Under the deal, 2 mln tonnes of LNG will be supplied annually to Japan from 2028, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim disclosed following a joint press conference with Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.
Earlier today, Anwar was given an official welcome ceremony at the Japanese Prime Minister’s Office in Tokyo, marking his first official visit to Japan since taking office.
Commenting on his first day of arrival in Japan on Tuesday, the prime minister in his Facebook posting, said it had been a fruitful day.
He said he had a meeting with philanthropist and founder of Nikkei Foundation and Sasakawa Peace Foundation, Tan Sri Yohei Sasakawa, to exchange views on world developments as well as efforts to strengthen peace developments as well as efforts to strengthen peace.
Anwar later went to Tokyo University to deliver a special lecture on new technologies especially artificial intelligence and its impact on human civilization before a meeting with Japanese conglomerates and industry leaders to explore quality investment opportunities that can generate economic growth and benefit the people of Malaysia.
On the LNG deal, a press statement issued by Petronas said the agreement between Petroliam Nasional Bhd. (PETRONAS) and JERA Co., Inc. reaffirmed one of Asia’s longest-standing Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) partnerships, through the signing of a new long-term supply agreement, extending their collaboration into the 2040s.
Under the agreement, PETRONAS, through its wholly owned subsidiary PETRONAS LNG Ltd. (PLL), will supply up to approximately 2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of LNG over a 20-year period starting in 2028. This reinforces PETRONAS’ position as a core supplier to Japan, one of the world’s largest LNG importers.
The agreement deepens a relationship that dates to 1983, when Malaysia shipped its first LNG cargo to Japan—laying the foundation for a trusted energy partnership that remains central to Japan’s energy security.
