KUALA LUMPUR, April 14: The Indians in the country, from the Telugu, Sikh and Tamil communities welcomed their New Year on April 9 (Ugadi), 13 (Vaisakhi) and 14 (Puthandu) respectively this year, with prayers as well as the usual accompaniment of special dishes, new clothes and much festivity.
In Brickfields here today, the Brickfields Rukun Tetangga, Malaysia HinduDharma Maamandram and Brickfields Community Society jointly organised a festival to showcase as well as enjoy the rich and diverse cultural heritage of the various communities.
Apart from the performances of traditional music, dance and other artforms, the celebration held around the Little India Fountain area, included games, exhibitions and the offerings of free food sponsored by the temples in Brickfields as well as several non governmental organisations.
Main organisers Brickfields RT said the event was made possible with the cooperation of Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL), which managed the logistics, and the support of the Federal Territory and Unity Ministry.
