PETALING JAYA, June 15: It was more than just a class reunion for former students of the Convent Teluk Intan (Class of 77) when they met this year – it was also a day to pay tribute to some of the teachers who taught them during those years in the school.
Distance was not a deterrent as two of the teachers came from Ipoh and Teluk Intan to join the 31 students, some of whom who had also travelled from as far as Canada, Australia and Singapore for the get-to-gather.
From the first class reunion to this year’s, the events have always been an occasion for fun, mery making, reminiscing the good, the bad and the hilarious moments of “growing up” in the then Convent Of the Holy Infant Jesus, now known as Sekolah Menengah Convent, and this year was no different, except that teachers joined in the fun as well.
Highlights of the event include expression time both for teachers and some students.
The teachers, namely Moira Tan, Lai Kong Wa, Chooi Hoon Naidu and Valerie Chan spoke of the things “they had to do” especially the “lecturing” in order to teach the students well while the students recalled the moments of “punishments” as well as the moments they truly learnt something from the teachers, and how grateful they were for the precious learning experiences that had stayed with them throughout their lives.
While as usual, updates on family and healthcare remained key topics among the former classmates seated together for the reunion, light discussions on the ongoing wars, the rising prices of “everything”, AI and politics also figured in some of these chats. The focus, however, remained on having a good time for all.
A member of the committee, that took took care of all arrangements including food, gifts, the agenda, and music summed up the reunion well.
“Some have left us between the first time we had a reunion and now. What is important is that we continue to be grateful for our lives and celebrate them as best as we can. Like this reunion day. Regardless of the ups and downs, we should continue to look forward to more good days ahead and keep our friendships strong and steady. Like the school badge, which said “Simple in Virtue and Steadfast in Duty”, many of us have had the opportunity to live our lives along this profound saying.”
