KUALA LUMPUR, July 15 – Sri Lanka’s Daily Mirror reported that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had emailed his resignation letter to the Parliament Speaker on Wednesday but an official announcement is most likely to come on Friday.
“Rajapaksa had emailed the letter on Wednesday evening to the Speaker but after it was validated, discussions began with the Attorney General over some technical issues,” the Daily Mirror reported.
It added that legal discussions were ongoing on the matter although Rajapaksa had confirmed the authentication of the letter.
Rajapaksa is reported to have arrived Singapore on Thursday evening after fleeing to Maldives earlier amid heavy protests in Sri Lanka. However, local media have not spotted him amid tight security.
Singapore police has also issued a stern warning against anyone staging any kind of protest in the country in relation to the development. There is a sizable population of Singaporeans of Sri Lankan origin.
