KUCHING, Oct 13: Sarawak’s Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication will consider using latest technologies to combat vandalism on utility infrastructure in the state.
The ministry said this was among the issues raised at the third Telecommunication Coordination Committee Meeting (TCCM) for 2023 here Thursday.
“Vandalism has caused losses amounting to millions of ringgit to utilities in the state. Various initiatives on anti-vandalism by utilising the latest technologies were also discussed and considered to be implemented,” it said.
Chaired by its minister, Datuk Julaihi Narawi, the meeting’s objectives among others was to report on project progress and performance by all agencies under the ministry, covering physical progress and challenges.
The committee was also briefed on the progress of 4G towers in Sarawak at the meeting.
A total of 3,430 towers out of the 4,055 completed towers are now ‘on air’. The rest of the towers are expected to be ’on air’ by Q3 2024.
“For 5G sites, a total of 341 out of 589 sites are now integrated giving a Coverage of Populated Area (COPA) of 44.9 per cent to date. The rest of the 5G sites are expected to be integrated by the end of this year giving a COPA of 60 per cent,” the ministry said.
