KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 5 — Sama Sama Oye, Malaysia’s first Punjabi & Bollywood radio and app, has broken new ground in digital entertainment by producing Leftover Mithai, a Punjabi micro-drama series created for the Malaysian Punjabi community. It will be officially available from Thursday, Oct 8.
Sama Sama Oye is helmed by Gina Dhaliwal Sran and offers a dedicated cultural and entertainment space for the Malaysian Punjabi and North Indian community, as well as Bollywood and Punjabi music lovers.
The platform features radio, music, podcasts, original audio and video storytelling, while highlighting local artists and culture. It garnered more than 5.8 million organic video views and generated upwards of 8.4 million community interactions.
Billed as Malaysia’s first Punjabi microdrama, Leftover Mithai brings contemporary Punjabi Malaysian experiences into a fast‑paced audio storytelling format.
Each short episode ends with a cliffhanger, designed to keep listeners hooked and eager for the next instalment.
At the centre of the drama is Simran, a 33‑year‑old marketing professional in Kuala Lumpur who regularly returns to her family home in Ipoh. While she has built a successful career and independent life in the city, Simran faces a different set of expectations at home — particularly around marriage.
Set within the Punjabi community of Perak, the series explores the tension between modern urban life and close‑knit community traditions, weaving in familiar elements of Malaysian Punjabi culture, family dynamics and community relationships.
A Story Close to Home
At its heart, Leftover Mithai asks a simple but universal question: What happens when everyone around you has an opinion about the life you’re supposed to live?
The creators hope the series will spark conversations beyond the audio itself. By reflecting everyday experiences — from the familiar “When are you getting married?” to the balancing act between family expectations and personal choices — the micro-drama aims to give Malaysian Punjabis a space to laugh, debate, and share their own stories. And yes, plenty of auntie gossip is promised along the way.
