RM1.39 Million Gone in a Flash: Miri Woman Claims Loss Occurred When Phone Blacked Out While Browsing Cake Advertisement

KUCHING, July 16: A 43-year-old woman in Miri lost RM1.389 million after clicking on a fraudulent online cake advertisement, which is believed to have enabled unauthorised transfers from her company’s bank accounts.

Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the victim lodged a police report yesterday after discovering the losses.

He said the victim had come across a cake advertisement on social media and clicked on the link provided to browse the menu and place an order.

“After clicking the link, the victim’s mobile phone screen suddenly went dark and became unresponsive.

“At about 10 am the same day, she contacted her bank and discovered that RM1,389,132 had been transferred without her authorisation from two of her company’s bank accounts. A total of 19 transactions were made to 15 different bank accounts on July 14,” he said in a statement today.

Mohd Farhan said the case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Computer Crimes Act 1997, which carries a maximum penalty of a RM150,000 fine, imprisonment of up to 10 years, or both, upon conviction
