KUALA LUMPUR, July 22: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who officiated the 11th World Tamil Research Conference here today, gave assurance that the well being of the Tamil community, along with all other communities in the country, will continue to be given attention, especially in the areas of education and support for the growth of the Tamil language preservation.
Anwar, who announced an additional allocation of RM2 million for University Malaya’s Department of Indian Studies of Department today, as well as another RM2 million, said that this could be also used for translation of some of the great works of literature in Tamil into Bahasa and English.
Close to three thousand people are attending the 3-day World Tamil Research Conference hosted by Malaysia which will conclude on Sunday, July 23. Participants at the event include Tamil scholars, literary figures from Malaysia as well as other countries including the US, Canada, UK, India, Mauritious, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Japan.
Human Resources Minister V.Sivakumar is chairman of the ongoing conference, which has been jointly organised by the OMS Foundation and University Malaya’s Department of Indian Studies in collaboration with the International Association of Tamil Research.
