Nearly 10,000 Relief Centres Ready For Northeast Monsoon Activation – JKM

NIBONG TEBAL, Oct 6 (Bernama) — The Social Welfare Department (JKM) is gearing up to deal with the Northeast Monsoon (MTL), including ensuring that nearly 10,000 temporary relief centres nationwide are ready to be activated as needed.

Its director-general, Datuk Che Murad Sayang Ramjan, said the activation of the centres would be carried out on the instructions of the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), based on the situation and needs of the affected areas.

“We have nearly 10,000 centres, but each year not all are activated at the same time. Sometimes, it only involves two, three or four states. These centres are indeed ready,” he told reporters after the closing ceremony of the JKM MADANI Adopted Village Programme 2026 at Masjid al-Fatah Sungai Setar Besar, Sungai Acheh, here today.

He said JKM is also ensuring that logistical aspects, including forward bases and disaster relief supply depots, are on standby, while food supplies, including retort ready-to-eat meals, are inspected to ensure they are in good condition and have not expired.

To ensure the smooth management of flood victims, he said residents had also been introduced to the use of the JKM MyIB application through community-level disaster preparedness training.

“Through the JKM MyIB system, villagers can register in advance, and when they are evacuated to the relief centres, they only need to scan their registered information.

“This measure not only facilitates the registration process for victims at the centres, but also the disbursement of Bantuan Wang Ihsan (BWI) through Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN),” he added.

Regarding personnel, Che Murad Sayang said the existing workforce is capable of managing flood situations according to JKM’s capacity, while nearly 6,000 volunteers nationwide could be mobilised at any time in the event of a large-scale disaster to assist in the management of relief centres and disaster relief supply depots.
