How Social Media Turned Neighbourhood Mak Kimbong Restaurant into a Food Sensation — and its Founder, a Millionaire

By Dr Mohd Safar Hasim

In the heart of Bandar Baru Bangi, the promise of “Enjoy Citarasa Masakan Kampung Sebenar” is more than just a tagline — it is a culinary movement that reverberates far beyond city lines.

What started as a modest local eatery has transformed into a high-volume food sensation, drawing hundreds of eager diners daily and catapulting its founder, Khairul Amilin Abdul Rahman, to his first million.

1. Built on Professional Culinary Foundations

Restoran Mak Kimbong’s success rests on a dynamic partnership rooted in professional expertise. Khairul Amilin and his wife, Rakipa Mastura, both graduated from UiTM’s Faculty of Hotel and Tourism Management.

While many of their fellow graduates chose administrative careers in government service — such as Assistant District Officers — or pursued other business ventures, Khairul Amilin and Rakipa were uniquely equipped to build a high-performing food enterprise from the ground up.

2. Early Days: From Paper Flyers to Grassroots Buzz

Success did not happen overnight. In the early days, before the digital era took full effect, the couple relied on hands-on, traditional marketing. They personally distributed paper flyers door-to-door to homes across Bandar Baru Bangi to introduce their masakan kampung to the local community and build their initial customer base.

3. The COVID-19 Pivot: From Crisis to Catalyst

While the pandemic and the Movement Control Order (MCO / Perintah Kawalan Perjalanan) forced many food businesses to shut down permanently, COVID-19 proved to be the ultimate turning point for Mak Kimbong.

With walk-in traffic cut to a standstill, Khairul Amilin and Rakipa adapted swiftly. They shifted their focus entirely to social media—primarily Facebook and Instagram at the time—and partnered with e-delivery platforms like GrabFood. The strategy paid off immediately: online orders surged, expanding their reach across Selangor and setting the business on an unstoppable growth path.

4. Digital Visibility Meets Fundamental Operational Excellence

While social media provided the spark and viral reach, digital marketing alone is not the sole reason Mak Kimbong prospers. The digital engine converted online views into foot traffic, but the core dining experience is what converts first-time visitors into lifelong regulars:

* Abundant Food Variety: Display counters are continuously stocked with an immense spread of authentic masakan kampung, offering diners an endless choice of rich, freshly prepared dishes.

* Comfortable Environment, Ambience: Clean, well-maintained, and fully air-conditioned eating areas provide a welcoming refuge from the tropical heat.

* Helpful & Well-Trained Staff: Service is attentive and warm. Employees actively assist diners with carrying food trays — an extra touch of hospitality extended not just to senior citizens, but to every customer walking through the door.

5. Masterclass in Marketing: Live Commerce & Lucky Draws

Complementing their operational strengths, Mak Kimbong’s marketing strategy continues to set industry standards:

* Dedicated Social Media Influencers: Today, the restaurant employs two permanent in-house influencers who host live sessions on TikTok and other platforms, showcasing cooked dishes in real time to thousands of viewers.

* Live Floor Walkthroughs: Smartphone cameras walk viewers straight through the display counters, capturing the aroma and vibrant colours of fresh masakan kampung.

*  Lucrative Lucky Draws: Beyond social feeds, Mak Kimbong regularly hosts cabutan bertuah with high-value prizes, continuously engaging their customer base and creating excitement around dining in.

6. Thoughtful Hospitality & Annual Upgrades

What reinforces this comfortable environment is the restaurant’s dedication to continuous improvement and community appreciation:

* Annual Upgrades Every Ramadan: While the restaurant closes during the holy month of Ramadan, the break is used productively. Every year, Khairul Amilin completely renovates and upgrades the dining areas to ensure a fresh, pristine environment for returning customers.

* Complimentary Bubur: Adding a touch of traditional warmth, Mak Kimbong offers free bubur (cycling through local favourites like bubur kacang, bubur pulut hitam, and bubur caca), enhancing the home-cooked dining atmosphere.

7. Regional Pull & Multi-Premise Expansion

The combination of viral digital marketing and top-tier hospitality transformed Mak Kimbong into a regional destination. Whole families regularly travel from Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan, and Melaka just for breakfast or lunch.

To accommodate the surging crowds, the business expanded into four nearby premises in Bandar Baru Bangi — separating the main central kitchen and service shop from multiple dedicated dining halls, including a relaxed gazebo setup.

8. National Recognition: Mentoring the Next Generation

Mak Kimbong’s remarkable turnaround and commercial playbook have not gone unnoticed at the highest levels. Recognising Khairul Amilin’s expertise in digital transformation and operational scaling, the government has offered him a substantial grant to mentor and guide 30 other restaurants across the country.

Through this mentorship programme, Khairul Amilin is tasked with sharing his proven formula—helping local F&B operators modernise their marketing, streamline central operations, and achieve long-term commercial sustainability.

9. What Other Restaurants Can Learn from Mak Kimbong’s Success

Mak Kimbong’s journey offers a practical blueprint for food entrepreneurs and established operators looking to scale in today's competitive landscape:

* Pivoting in Crisis: Instead of waiting out disruptions like the MCO, adopting digital channels early creates resilience and unlocks entirely new customer channels.

* Blending Online Hype with Offline Quality: Social media gets customers through the door once; high food variety, air-conditioned comfort, clean facilities, and attentive staff keep them returning.

* In-House Media Capabilities: Investing in permanent, dedicated content creators for live broadcasts on platforms like TikTok builds real-time trust and authentic engagement far beyond static ads.

* Continuous Reinvestment: Utilising planned downtime — such as closing during Ramadan for renovations—ensures the brand stays fresh and premium in the eyes of patrons.

* Value-Added Customer Care: Thoughtful touches like free desserts (bubur) and proactive staff assistance build deep brand loyalty and positive word-of-mouth.

10. A Multi-Million-Ringgit Landmark & The Merdeka 118 Horizon

Converting online views into packed dining rooms propelled Khairul Amilin to cross his first RM1 million milestone in 2024.

Now, Mak Kimbong is preparing for its most prestigious expansion yet. Beginning in early November 2026, the brand will launch a premier outlet at Merdeka 118 (Warisan 118) — Malaysia’s iconic skyscraper and one of the tallest structures in the world.

Having recently returned from China after personally sourcing specialised kitchenware and utensils, Khairul Amilin is ready for this major milestone. Situated on the third floor within a one-acre dining space seating 1,200 people across 36 outlets, Mak Kimbong will be one of only three Malay food establishments on the floor. The location provides direct access to a captive audience of 7,000 Maybank employees and 3,000 PNB staff, positioning Mak Kimbong on the national stage.

11. The Ultimate Horizon: Target Bursa Malaysia Listing

Beyond Merdeka 118, Khairul Amilin’s long-term vision is set on an even larger stage: an eventual public listing on Bursa Malaysia (KLSE). Taking inspiration from successful Malaysian F&B market debuts —following the growth trajectories of homegrown coffee chains and food conglomerates — Mak Kimbong aims to transform from a beloved masakan kampung brand into a publicly traded corporate success story.

By scaling operational capacity, standardising central kitchen workflows, and expanding into iconic commercial hubs, the road to Bursa Malaysia represents the ultimate evolution of a homegrown Bangi eatery into an institutional corporate giant.
