PUTRAJAYA, Sept 16: The appointment of Senator Fuziah Salleh as the secretary-general of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) is reflective of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s continued commitment towards the empowering of women in leadership roles, says a member of the central PKR Wanita executive council, J.Karen Kasturi.

It is historic as it is the first time that a woman has been appointed to this top position in the party, said Karen in a statement issued here today.

Under the prime minister’s Unity Government, many women have been exalted to key ministerial positions including Fadhlina Sidek as the first woman Education Minister, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman
Said, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, Dr Zaliha Mustafa and Hannah Yeoh.

For the first time, an Indian woman was also appointed a deputy minister, namely Senator Saraswathy who is the Deputy Minister of National Unity.

“More recently, Datuk Seri Dr Maimunah Mohd Sharif, became the first woman to be appointed as the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur City Hall, further proving Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s commitment towards the agenda of empowering women leadership in Malaysia,” she said.

Karen, who is also Special Duties Officer with the National Unity Ministry, added that many women, especially young women in the political arena, will be inspired by these appointments that are expected to help reduce the gender inequality in the various fields.
