KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 27 (Bernama) — The National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations should not be driven by emotions and sentiments, but instead be an opportunity for Malaysians to express their love and affection for the country.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said calls to boycott the celebrations should not be made merely because of dissatisfaction over certain issues.
“Let us use this space and opportunity to strengthen our love for our country. At the very least, our burning patriotism will serve as an indication to all parties, both within and outside the country, that Malaysians will not allow their homeland to become a political battleground or the subject of anyone’s polemics.
“I strongly disagree with those planning to boycott the National Day celebrations merely because of certain sentiments, such as the Rohingya issue,” he said in his speech at the launch of the Defence Ministry-level National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang celebration today.
He said Malaysia was an independent, peaceful, and sovereign country built on mutual understanding and harmony among the various races and religions.
Therefore, these values must continue to be embraced, appreciated, and upheld by all segments of society to ensure that the country’s peace and sovereignty are always preserved.
Mohamed Khaled also called on all Malaysians to fly the Jalur Gemilang with pride and gratitude, while remembering to pray for the country’s well-being and the safety and sacrifices of security personnel serving at the borders, as well as the well-being of all Malaysians.
