China Hits Back At US Tech Executives Over AI Development Warning

BEIJING, Sept 14 (Bernama-dpa) — China has criticised warnings issued by several United States (US) tech executives regarding the potential risks of artificial intelligence (AI), and the potential threat posed by China’s expertise in the field, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.

Spreading narratives of threat, confrontation, and malicious competition disrupts the process of global governance of AI and is not in the interests of either side, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said in Beijing on Monday.

All sides should work together to promote the open development of AI, he added.

Over the weekend there were renewed calls from AI tech executives in the US to slow down the development of artificial intelligence. They included Dario Amodei, boss of the AI company Anthropic, who was backed by rivals such as Sam Altman, chief executive of ChatGPT developer OpenAI, and tech billionaire Elon Musk.

Amodei wrote on Saturday that he was concerned that, within six to twelve months, AI could be capable of taking over the entire internet and potentially causing hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of damage.

He also warned of a threat to national security should projects with links to the Chinese Communist Party gain the upper hand.

China is pushing ahead with an ambitious AI development plan. This weekend, at the summit of the BRICS nations in New Delhi, President Xi Jinping proposed that the international community should quickly agree on joint AI regulations.

To date, US firms are regarded as the technology leaders in AI. However, Chinese AI companies are seen to be catching up rapidly.
