Batang Kali Landslide: Death toll at 21, while camping, picnic sites in Selangor ordered to shut down for 7 days

SHAH ALAM, Dec 16 – All picnic and camping sites in Selangor state have been ordered to shut down for seven days, effective Saturday, Dec 17.

The order was issued by Selangor State Government Secretary, Dato’ Haris Kasim who is also chairman of the Selangor Disaster Management Committee, following a tragic landslide early this morning at the camping site of Father’s Organic Farm in Batang Kali.

The landslide has taken the lives of 21 people as of 7pm today, while another 12 more people are still missing. Teachers and students on a private camping retreat were also reported to be among the victims.

The landslide occurred at around 2.42 am, with many of the victims believed to be still asleep in their tent at that time.

The government has announced initial financial assistance for the victims as well as other support and help for them.

As at 8.30 pm Friday, search and rescue units were still working with the hope of recovering the missing victims.
