KUALA LUMPUR, May 9: Ten years ago, Vijay arrived in Malaysia with little more than his scissors, comb, and a determination to build a life through his craft.
Jovial and warm-hearted, he quickly became a familiar face in the Ampang-Ulu Klang 4 community as well as in Ampang Town in Selangor, greeting customers with laughter and stories that made his barbershop more than a place for haircuts. But underneath the cheerful exterior lay years of hardship.
Working under demanding conditions, Vijay endured long hours from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., rarely getting the scheduled days off when business was good, and stood on his feet for almost 12 hours a day.
Financially, the wages were modest, and physically, the toll was heavy. Still, he persevered, driven by the dream of owning his own salon one day.
His resilience was not only for himself but for his family — his wife and two children — who depended on his sacrifices.
Malaysia gave Vijay valuable experience. After a decade of service, he made the bold decision to return to Tamil Nadu recently, carrying with him the confidence of mastery.
Today, the 30-something Vijay is the owner of his own simple and modest barber shop in his rural village of Viralimalai to welcome his customers with respect and joy.
Called VRS Salon – Men’s Parlour & Spa (HP 63838 12245), it’s located on 2nd Street, Manamettupatti Road. The town is best known for the historic Viralimalai Murugan Temple and for its Peacock Sanctuary.

No longer confined to the rigid schedules of an employer, Vijay enjoys the freedom to set his own hours and design his own services. For Vijay, this humble hairdressing salon represents more than a change of location. It’s a transformation from employee to entrepreneur, from endurance to empowerment.
Vijay’s story is one of resilience, sacrifice, and triumph. It reminds us that even in the face of hardship, perseverance can carve a path to independence, dignity, and joy when you dare to dream of a better life.
