WASHINGTON, Feb 23 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) — A significant winter storm blanketed the East Coast of the United States (US) with snow, while gusty winds caused almost 6,500 flight cancellations and delays on Monday, according to the FlightAware.com portal, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.
“Total cancellations within, into, or out of the US today: 5,445,” the portal said.
Another 911 flights have been delayed, it added.
Three major airports in the New York City area – John F. Kennedy, Laguardia and Newark – had to cancel almost 90 per cent of flights. Boston Logan International Airport cancelled almost 1,000 flights, or nearly 90 per cent, the portal said.
The PowerOutage.us portal reported that more than 550,000 customers have no electricity on the East Coast.
The US National Weather Service warned that a major winter storm is expected to bring heavy snow, strong winds, and coastal flooding across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast that may cause impossible travel conditions and power outages.
