Azam Baki Gives Statement to Police Over Defamation, Abuse of Power Probes

KUALA LUMPUR, June 3 (Bernama) — Former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki today gave a statement to police to assist investigations into alleged defamatory article, as well as abuse of power and criminal intimidation.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M. Kumar said Azam’s statement was recorded under Section 112 of the Criminal Procedure Code in connection with the two cases currently being investigated by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).

“Both investigation papers would be referred to the Attorney General’s Chambers in the near future for advice and further instructions in accordance with Article 145(3) of the Federal Constitution,” he said in a statement today. 

He said the first case involves an investigation into a report concerning a Bloomberg.com article alleged to contain defamatory statements regarding the shareholding of Velocity Capital Partner Berhad, while the second case relates to allegations of abuse of power and criminal intimidation involving businessman Albert Tei. 

“The public is advised not to engage in any speculation related to the cases that could potentially affect or interfere with the investigation process,” he said.

He added that PDRM is committed to ensure transparency and integrity in its investigations to uphold justice and would not compromise with any individual found to have breached the laws currently in force.
