JOHOR BAHRU, Dec 13: A coal-handling crane at the Tanjung Bin Power Plant near Kukup, Pontian, collapsed today, killing two workers and injuring three others.
Pontian Baru Fire and Rescue Station chief Mahadir Mamat said Muhammad Alfarid Ahmad, 19, and Muhammad Amaluddin Hisamudin, 22, died in the incident, which occurred at 12.10 pm.
He said the victims were retrieved from beneath the rubble at about 3 pm, and their bodies were handed over to the police for further action.
“The three injured men were taken to Pontian Hospital,” he said.
The collapse also triggered a small fire, which was successfully contained with assistance from the Malakoff Emergency Response Team (ERT).
Meanwhile, Malakoff Corporation Berhad (Malakoff) says it will conduct an internal investigation to determine the root cause of an incident that occurred during maintenance work at the Tanjung Bin Complex jetty.
In a statement, the company said the plant’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) was immediately deployed to the scene following the crane’s collapse.
“Following the incident, two contractors’ personnel have sadly passed away, and three contractors’ personnel sustained injuries and have been hospitalised,” Malakoff said.
The company said the affected area has been secured as a precautionary measure and that the investigation will commence once rescue operations are fully completed.
“The safety and well-being of all personnel involved remains our highest priority,” it said.
Malakoff also said operations at both the Tanjung Bin Power Plant and the Tanjung Bin Energy Power Plant continue as normal and are not affected by the incident.
