World leaders condemn shooting of Shinzo Abe as Japanese media confirm his death

KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 – Leaders and the general public worldwide have expressed their shock over the shooting of former Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe this morning, describing it a dastardly act.

Latest news from local media reported that Shinzo Abe has died after being critically shot while speaking at a ceremony in the western city of Nara, Japan.

Japan’s Ambassador to Malaysia Takahashi Katsuhiko also confirmed the death of Shinzo Abe in his Twitter account.

“Deepest condolences on the demise of former PM Shinzo ABE. It was great honor to have him in Malaysia in March,” Takahashi tweeted.

There had been some hope earlier as he was reported to be in hospital fighting for his life. Many leaders had expressed hope and prayers for him to recover.

Earlier, Malaysia’s King, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah expressed sadness over the shooting of Abe, and prayed for his recovery. His Majesty also conveyed his sympathy to his family as well as the people of Japan, urging them to remain strong in facing the situation.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, currently on a working visit in Turkey, also relayed a message, expressing his sadness over the shocking incident.

“The news about this incident is extremely saddening. On behalf of the Malaysian Government (we are) praying for Shinzo Abe to recover.”

Other world leaders also expressed their shock and disbelief over the shooting of the ex premier in Japan, which seldom makes news for incidents like gun-shooting.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted: “Deeply distressed by the attack on my dear friend Abe Shinzo. Our thoughts and prayers are with him, his family, and the people of Japan.”

UK’s Boris Johnson also condemned the shooting, saying, “Utterly appalled and saddened to hear about the despicable attack on Shinzo Abe. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones.”
