Water Level Of Several Selangor, NS Rivers Rise To Danger, Warning levels, Johor Floods Worsen

PETALING JAYA, Jan 24 – Several rivers in Peninsular Malaysia states have reached alert and danger levels, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change’s PublicInfoBanjir (Flood Info) website.

In its Facebook posting, PublicInfoBanjir said as of 8pm today, the Sg Muar Kg Tiong in Negeri Sembilan was at 21.58 m, exceeding the Danger level by 0.58 m.

At about 7.30pm, the Klang River in Bandar Klang, Selangor reached 2.45m, exceeding the alert level by 0.05m. Two rivers in the Kuala Selangor area have been also put on the alert levels.

At 6pm today, Malaysia’s Meteorological Department had issued another warning that the heavy rains and thunderstorms that it had warned of on Monday in several states, were expected to continue, cautioning people to be on alert in the event of any flooding.

It has forecast heavy rains to continue till Wednesday in Johor (Segamat, Kluang, Mersing, Kulai, Kota Tinggi and Johor Bahru) and Sabah: Sandakan (Telupid, Kinabatangan, Beluran and Sandakan) and Kudat (Pitas dan Kudat).

Meanwhile, the flood situation in Johor has continued to worsen.

A total of 16 flood relief centres have been opened to house 1,703 people who have been evacuated, from several districts in the state, National News Agency, BERNAMA reported, citing the State Disaster Management Committee,.

Heavy rains have been also forecast for Pahang (Pekan dan Rompin) Negeri Sembilan Melaka Johor (Tangkak, Muar, Batu Pahat and Pontian) and in Sarawak: Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Betong, Sarikei (Sarikei and Meradong), Mukah dan Bintulu (Bintulu). In the interior of Sabah, heavy rains have been forecast for Tambunan, as well as in Pantai Barat, Tawau (Lahad Datu) and Kudat (Kota Marudu)

The following states have been advised to be on alert with continuous rain expected in their areas, namely Pahang (Maran, Kuantan and Bera). In Sarawak: Sri Aman, Sarikei (Pakan and Julau), Sibu, Bintulu (Tatau and Sebauh) and Miri (Subis, Beluru, Miri dan Marudi) and in Sabah, alert have been issued for Sandakan (Tongod).
