Undi 18 on, Govt won’t appeal court’s say

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 21 – The government will not appeal the Kuching High Court’s decision to allow voting from age 18 and the automatic registration of voters by December 31st this year.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law), Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar confirmed that the Cabinet had agreed to the matter during a meeting on Sept 10.

The Federal Government will comply with the court decision and will look into implementing the Undi 18 system, he said during the question and answer session in Parliament today.

He said that there was not much difference in the legal stand point between the Attorney General and the court on the matter as the original plan by the Election Commission was to implement it in September 2002 and hence the difference was in the timing only.

He said this in response to a question from Member Parliament for Puchong, Gobind Singh Deo, who wanted to know if the government will follow the court’s decision on the Undi 18 and the automatic registration of the said voters.
