Acting head of UNAMA Georgette Gagnon said that UNAMA, which serves as a link between the international community and Afghan’s current government, is working to promote human rights [in Afghanistan], address the situation of women and girls, and ensure that all those in need of humanitarian assistance receive it.

MOSCOW, Dec 9 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) — The United Nations is seeking to reintegrate Afghanistan into the international community and ensure the country’s commitment to its global obligations, the Tolo news portal reported, citing acting head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) Georgette Gagnon, according to Sputnik/RIA Novosti.

In accordance with the mandate granted by the UN Security Council, UNAMA serves as a link between the international community and Afghan’s current government, Gagnon said in an interview with the portal on Monday, adding that UNAMA’s mandate also includes reporting on the Afghan people’s current situation, including that of women and girls.

“We work to promote human rights [in Afghanistan], address the situation of women and girls, and ensure that all those in need of humanitarian assistance receive it. International organisations and UNAMA are collaborating on this. Overall, we are working inside Afghanistan with various communities to help improve the conditions of families, society, and the country as a whole,” Gagnon was quoted as saying by the news portal.

Previously, Afghan supreme leader’s spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid has criticised UNAMA for failing to provide efficient political representation for Afghanistan on a global level.

UNAMA was established in 2002 by the UN Security Council at the request of Afghan government. Its current mandate runs until March 17, 2026.
