KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 24 – Members of the UMNO Supreme Council (MKT) have unanimously decided to espouse the suggestion of the King, Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, that a unity government be formed and that Barisan Nasional supports and participates in that government, a statement released early this morning by UMNO Secretary General, Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said.

Among other decisions, the council, which met here today, also said it will participate in an unity government that will not be led by Perikatan Nasional in order to ensure that a stable and progressive government is formed.

The special meeting, chaired by UMNO President Dato Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, was attended by the council members here on Wednesday evening amid the ongoing political impasse in the country after the 15th General Election.

Following the election, none of the political parties had gained a simply majority to form a government or endorse their choice of candidate as the 10th Prime Minister of Malaysia. The two parties that received the highest number of parliamentary seats were Pakatan Harapan with 82, and PN with 73.

MKT said it had studied very carefully all the discussion points made during negotiations between the Barisan Nasional (BN) representatives and PH as well as the discussions between BN and PN for a coalition government.

The council also agreed that all party representatives who had won Parliamentary seats in the election, comply and accept any form of unity government to be potentially put forward by the King.

At the meeting, council members also pledged their support for Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to continue as the president of BN and UMNO president.

They also set UMNO’s Summit Meeting for this year from Dec 21-24.
