GYEONGJU (South Korea), Oct 29: United States President Donald Trump is not done with his praise for Malaysia’s leadership under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, citing the country’s successful role in the landmark signing of the Cambodia-Thailand peace deal last Sunday.
Describing the situation of the conflict as “too hot with bullets flying all over the place” at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit here today, he said with the help of Malaysia, the peace deal was successfully signed between the two countries at the sidelines of the 47th ASEAN Summit and related meetings held in Kuala Lumpur.
“And after about two days, we ended up with the help of Malaysia. Malaysia was like a mediator. We used beautiful facilities in Malaysia.
“Malaysia was fantastic, and they helped in implementing it (the signing). Prime Minister was a great, great guy. Just left him and within two days, we signed the deal. The two people (Thailand and Cambodia) came in, and they were like best friends. It was a beautiful thing to see; we saved probably millions of lives,” he said in his speech during the APEC CEO Summit Korea 2025 here today.
The peace deal which is known as the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord, was signed here by Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, with Trump and Anwar, who then signed as witnesses.
Trump is currently on his last leg of his Asia tour after visiting Malaysia and Japan. He is expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping tomorrow with tariff issues discussion on the table ahead of the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting (AELM), which will start this Friday.
Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, is leading the Malaysian delegation to the AELM and is expected to arrive here on Thursday.
