Sibu Jaya is New Growth Hub for Central Sarawak

SIBU, Nov 8: Sibu Jaya has emerged as the new growth hub of central Sarawak after three decades of phased development, says Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

With over 35,000 residents, more than 6,600 housing units, 384 commercial lots and 179 industrial sites developed, Sibu Jaya has evolved from a low-cost housing area into a modern community and economic centre, he said

“Sibu Jaya today is strategically located. It not only serves as Sibu’s satellite town but has become a catalyst for growth in surrounding areas such as Kanowit, Song, Julau, Pakan and Dalat,” he said.

His speech was read by Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee at the Sibu Jaya 30th Anniversary Celebration and Sibu Jaya Carnival Concert 2025 here tonight.

Abang Johari said the township’s growth was driven by the 2005 Sibu Jaya Master Plan and improved connectivity through the Durin Bridge, linking it to the Pan Borneo Highway and opening up new economic and investment opportunities.

He said Sibu Jaya’s progress has also earned national and regional recognition through awards such as the Successful Planning Award (2007), South East Asia Properties Award (2014), SHEDA Excellence Awards (2017) and a Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM) accolade in 2023 for the Azman Hashim Community Sports Centre.

Abang Johari said the state government is now focusing on the next phase of development, including second-generation housing, business and industrial expansion, renewable energy initiatives and positioning Sibu Jaya as a sports and recreation hub for the central region.
