Should there be official guidelines on vehicle repossession procedures in Malaysia?

KUALA LUMPUR, June 6: Should the government introduce official guidelines on vehicle repossession procedures following complaints of aggressive behaviour by certain parties during repossession operations?

A suggestion on this has come MIC Vice-President Datuk T. Murugiah, who spoke of complaints received on the matter after the affected vehicle owners had defaulted on their monthly loan payments to banks.

The complaints centre around individuals or groups of re-possessors acting aggressively by arriving in large groups and intimidating vehicle owners and their families.

“This is an alarming situation that should not be happening in a law-abiding country like Malaysia,” said Murugiah, who proposed that the Home Ministry (KDN) introduce official guidelines to standardise vehicle repossession procedures nationwide.

He also proposed that every individual working as a vehicle re-possessor be required to undergo specialised training and security vetting by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and be issued an official authority card to certify their identity and qualifications and that banks should only engage licensed security companies, recognised and monitored by the Home Ministry to handle the repossession process legally and professionally.
