PETALING JAYA, May 23: Recognising stress and taking steps towards reducing them will be an important factor towards better mental health, says Mala Davi, the chief executive officer of MDC Training and Management Services.

Mala, who has been actively promoting better mental health for more than 20 years, said recognising early signs of mental health challenges and addressing them via a structured way will even keep substance abuse and other outlets people may seek to relieve their stress.

Speaking to Weekly Echo about her upcoming Mental Health First Aid Workshop (May 24-25) here, she explained that her workshop addresses issues like stress and other mental challenges and what kind of “First Aid” help one can provide themselves or people close to them undergoing challenges, while waiting for the professionals to arrive and give them the specific assistance that they would need.

“These days, the new disease is stress and many people are not even aware of the symptoms. They quietly face it and without any real relief, the stress builds up and eventually it translates into deeper issues.

“At our workshop, we talk about symptoms and coping mechanisms and how to respond to any given situation confidently. While care givers are our primary participants, our workshop is intended for anyone who is dealing with stress at workplace or home or just looking out for someone they care and we provide them the guidelines on supporting someone with empathy and care.

“We also show them the steps to connect to professional help without any undue stigma.”

Mala said a special 50 percent discount would be offered for participants at the workshop this week (May 24-25).
