PUTRAJAYA, Sept 1: Malaysia’s Port Klang has hit the 10th position in Lloyd’s List of Top 100 Busiest Ports, creating a historic milestone in the Malaysian maritime industry – being placed among the top 10 busiest container ports in the world.

Announcing this in a statement today, the Ministry of Transport said Port Klang has surpassed Hong Kong in the rankings, underscoring Malaysia’s strength as an emerging maritime powerhouse.

“This achievement is especially meaningful as it coincides with the nation’s 68th Merdeka Day, symbolising resilience, unity, and progress on the international stage,” the statement said.

In 2024, the port reported an outstanding performance recording 14.64 million TEUs throughput, a growth of 4.1% compared to 14.06 million TEUs in 2023.

The growth was attributed to a robust 8.9% increase in import and export activities, that also reflected Malaysia’s solid trade fundamentals.

“Despite global challenges such as the Red Sea crisis, Port Klang demonstrated resilience and adaptability to shifting global trade flows.”

For this year, throughput is projected to reach 14.98 million TEUs.

The climb in global rankings has been consistent, highlighting steady improvement over recent years, from 13th position in 2022 to 11th position in 2023.

The progress has also been supported by major infrastructure development projects that saw the expansion of terminals, doubling their capacities in Westports, and the upgrading of Wharf 9 to handle larger vessels and higher cargo volumes, the statement said.

The long term development of Carey Island is meanwhile set to achieve 30 million TEUs annual capacity by 2060.

Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) has maintained its 15th position globally in both 2023 and 2024, recording a throughput of 12.25 million TEUs in 2024, a 16.9% increase from 10.48 million TEUs in 2023.

“Together, Port Klang and PTP reinforce Malaysia’s position as the fifth- largest country in the world by container throughput in 2024, enhancing Malaysia’s strategic role along the Strait of Malacca, one of the busiest and most vital shipping lanes in the world.

The ministry also expressed its appreciation to Port Klang Authority, Westports Malaysia Sdn. Bhd Northport (Malaysia) Bhd, Johor Port Authority, Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) and all stakeholders in the maritime and logistics sector for their collective contributions to this achievement.

“This success reflects not merely statistical growth but the result of progressive government policies, consistent infrastructure and technology investments, and a shared commitment to sustaining Malaysia’s global competitiveness.

“As Malaysia commemorates its 68th Independence Day, Port Klang’s achievement stands as a symbol of the nation’s journey – from a trading hub to a world – class maritime port. This accomplishment shines as a beacon of Malaysia’s resilience and determination to achieve global excellence.”
