Penang’s Comprehensive Plan For VMY2026, Focuses Beyond George Town

GEORGE TOWN, Nov 20 (Bernama) — The Penang government has drafted a comprehensive plan focused on introducing new tourism products and experiences highlighting local unique attractions for the upcoming Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VMY2026).

Penang Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman, Wong Hon Wai, said one of the key initiatives is the ‘Beyond George Town’ programme, which will extend tourism focus to Seberang Perai.

“It will be implemented through the development of agro-tourism packages, river tourism and food tourism, such as culinary trails in Bukit Mertajam, Kepala Batas and Nibong Tebal.

“Emphasis will also be placed on nature-based and sustainable tourism, such as turtle conservation at Pantai Kerachut, mangrove forest tours and agricultural tourism.

“We will also enhance creative and living heritage tourism through traditional cooking workshops, handicrafts and community art activities,” he said in a written reply at the state assembly sitting here today, in response to a question from Tan Hooi Peng (PH-Seri Delima) regarding the state government’s plans to attract more tourists to Penang for VMY2026.

From a promotional angle, Wong said Penang will execute a global marketing campaign based on digital content and collaborations with the private sector and international influencers to showcase its unique culture and heritage.

He added that the state will strengthen its partnerships with airlines, online travel agencies and international tour operators to launch special packages.

“Simultaneously, the aspect of sustainable tourism management is being prioritised through a real-time information system to monitor tourist density at heritage sites and encourage visits to alternative areas,” he said.

He explained that all these measures are being implemented in line with the national VMY2026 strategy in close collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC).

MOTAC is providing various support grants for tourism, cultural and arts events, for which state government agencies can apply.

With the themes “Malaysia Truly Asia” and “Surreal Experiences,” VMY2026 aims to invite the world to explore the true soul of Malaysia through its unique culture and natural beauty.
