One Hope Charity Launches Fundraising Drive For Critically Injured Penang Man In Thailand

GEORGE TOWN, Jan 21 (Bernama) — One Hope Charity & Welfare has launched a fundraising drive seeking RM80,000 to cover medical treatment and the cost of bringing back to Penang a 21-year-old man who is in critical condition following a road accident in Krabi, Thailand.

Its chairman Datuk Chua Sui Hau said the fundraising drive was launched after his team visited the victim’s family and assessed the case, which involved a cross-border medical emergency.

“This case involves a young man from a middle-income family who requires immediate treatment. In this regard, One Hope Charity has agreed to raise funds to cover the cost of his treatment and bringing him back to Penang,” he said in a statement today.

The victim, Muhammad Hazim Rafiq Hussain from Penang, is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Krabi after being involved in an accident during a motorcycle convoy with friends at the end of December.

According to his mother, Rozina @ Norhafizah Abdul Rajad, 51, Muhammad Hazim Rafiq left for Thailand on Dec 30, 2025, with five friends. The following day, a lorry reportedly lost control and collided with the motorcycle he was riding, causing it to overturn and leaving him unconscious at the scene.

“The victim sustained serious injuries to his face and nose, leaving him unable to breathe normally and prompting a tracheostomy to deliver oxygen straight to his lungs.

“Although his condition is reported to be stable, the victim still requires continuous oxygen support and follow-up treatment, including facial bone repair surgery, and any infection or complication could be life-threatening,” the statement said.

Rozina said that her son was covered only by compulsory motorcycle insurance with a medical coverage limit of RM4,000, while daily treatment costs continue to increase and do not include follow-up surgery or extended hospitalisation.

According to the doctor, the victim may be brought back to Penang for further treatment, provided that oxygen support is available, but the family must first settle the medical bills in Thailand.

Members of the public who wish to make donations can do so through the Public Bank Berhad account under the name of One Hope Charity & Welfare (Account No.: 3201428817) or via the official website at www.onehopecharity.org.
