Northern Borders University, King Salman Centre Develop Smart Aid For The Blind

ARAR (Saudi Arabia), Oct 5 (Bernama-SPA) —  A research team from Northern Borders University in Arar, in partnership with the King Salman Centre for Disability Research, has developed an intelligent system that leverages Vision Transformer technology and a dual-attention mechanism to help blind and visually impaired individuals navigate various environments more independently.

According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the system, reflecting the humanistic spirit of science, analyses images and extracts detailed visual features, enabling users to identify their surroundings — such as offices, classrooms or stores — without direct assistance.

This enhances their privacy and confidence while moving through different spaces.

Scientific tests have demonstrated the system’s superior accuracy and efficiency compared with conventional models, along with the added advantage of compatibility with mobile and smart devices.

Supported by the King Salman Centre for Disability Research, the project aligns with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 to empower persons with disabilities, enhance their social inclusion, and promote equal opportunities in education, employment and mobility.
