Muhyiddin not resigning, ready for vote of confidence in Parliament in September

Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 4 – Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said he will not be resigning but will be ready for a vote of confidence in the Dewan Rakyat when the Parliament sits this September.

In a special message broadcast live today through RTM, following his audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong or King, Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shan earlier this morning, Muhyiddin said he had been informed by His Majesty that a total of eight Members of Parliament from UMNO had written to the King to inform him that they had withdrawn their support for Muhyiddin.

He said the King had cited two articles from the Federal Constitution whereby firstly, the King would have to appoint a Member of Parliament believed to have the support of the majority of MPs as a Prime Minister to head the Cabinet.

Secondly, in the event that the Prime Minister no longer enjoyed the majority support in the Parliament, he would have to resign or advise the King for the dissolvement of Parliament.

Muhyiddin said that during his audience with the King, he had informed His Majesty that he still had the majority support of the Members of Parliament and hence the call for his resignation did not arise.

He also said that with questions being raised on his premiership, a motion for a vote of confidence on him would be made at the Parliament during the sitting in September.

Meanwhile, he said the government will operate as usual and that he and others in the Cabinet would continue to carry out their responsibilities in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic.
