Updated: Ministry reports 23 deaths from COVID-19

The PPVAZ vaccination centre in University Malaysia is set to start operations on Wednesday. Khairy Jamaluddin, Minister of Science, Technology & Innovation; Coordinating Minister for COVID-19 Immunisation, announced in his Twitter the preparedness of the centre. Responding to numerous queries on social media on travelling to vaccination centres amid MCO restrictions, the minister gave assurance that those travelling across districts or states for vaccination can do so without police permit.

PUTRAJAYA, May 4 – The Ministry of Health said 23 Malaysians were reported to have died from COVID-19 today, bringing up the number of deaths from the virus in the country to 1,574. All of them had a history of chronic illnesses.

The ministry also announced in its Facebook that 17 new clusters were reported today involving 7 communiy clusters, 5 at work places , 4 from educational places and one from a religious event.

Earlier today, Senior Minister (Security) Datuk Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced that the Movement Control Order (MCO) will be effected in six districts in Selangor state from May 6-17, namely Gombak, Sepang, Hulu Langat, Petaling, Kuala Langat and Klang.

As part of measures to curb the spike in COVID-19 cases, the Conditional MCO will also be continued in the remaining Selangor states of Hulu Selangor, Kuala Selangor and Sabak Bernam.

Selangor has been recording some of the highest number of COVID-19 positive cases since April 20.

Travel between the districts and interstate travel will not be allowed during the MCO.

As of today, Malaysia reported 2,500 new cases with 4 of them being imported cases. This brought the total number of people who had been infected with the virus to 417,512.

The government today also announced the standard operating procedures to follow during the upcoming Syawal, with the end of Ramadan. Among them, there will be no open houses during the celebration of Syawal, although family visits will be allowed in all areas except those under enhanced MCO.

Family visits in districts under MCO will be allowed only on the first day. Al visits will be also limited to 15 people at all given times.
