Malaysian PM conveys condolences to Indonesia on submarine tragedy

PUTRAJAYA, April 25 – Malaysian Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today conveyed his condolences to Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo, the government and the people of the republic on the KRI Nanggala 402 submarine tragedy.

In a statement published on his Facebook, the prime minister said Malaysians were shocked and saddened over the tragedy and were with the people of Indonesia during this moment of grief.

He also conveyed his condolences to the family of the 53 crew members of the submarine.

The Indonesian Armed Forces this evening confirmed that all on board the submarine had died.

In a press conference broadcast live on local television stations, the Chief of Indonesia’s Armed Forces, Commander Hadi Tjahjanto said that based on strong evidence the submarine had sunk.

The KRI Nanggala was reported to have lost contact early Wednesday morning during a torpedo training exercise off the waters of Bali. The exercise also involved another submarine, several Indonesian navy ships and fighter jets.
