KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 23 (Bernama) — The collaboration between Kuala Lumpur and Shanghai underscores the close ties between Malaysia and China’s creative communities, demonstrating how robust bilateral ties can support Kuala Lumpur’s ongoing urban transformation.

Malaysia-China Friendship Association (PPMC) President Datuk Abdul Majid Ahmad Khan said the exchange of views between the two cities offers valuable insights into how city design can enhance urban living, strengthen industries and enrich communities.

“The Shanghai government and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) wanted to collaborate with Kuala Lumpur because it has some plans to strengthen its creative economy and promote sustainable design practices.

“As our part in PPMC, we are bridging with Shanghai to tell about our cultural connection in terms of youth and sports, and also sharing prosperity and growth that Malaysia enjoy,” he told Bernama after the Opening Ceremony of the 2025 World Design Cities Conference (WDCC) Shanghai Design 100+ Global Competition Overseas Exhibition here today.

He said Shanghai’s recognition in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network since 2010 has inspired Kuala Lumpur to pursue similar recognition.

He added that with Kuala Lumpur’s continuous efforts in creative development and sustainable urban planning, the city is well-positioned to become a strong candidate for future nomination.

Meanwhile, he commended the Embassy of China in Malaysia and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) for their valuable support and cooperation in making this exhibition possible, reflecting the shared commitment to strengthening the creative and cultural ties between the two cities.

The exhibition is an international display of outstanding design achievements that were selected as part of the annual “Shanghai Design 100+” Global Competition. It is open to the public at The Exchange TRX from Oct 23 to 26.

The opening ceremony was attended by Shanghai Design 100+ Global Ambassador and fashion designer Datuk Jimmy Choo Yean Keat, China Industrial Design Institute Chairman Wang Lin, and DBKL Department of City Planning Director Rosli Nordin.
