Updated: Interstate, overseas travel allowed from Oct 11

Empty roads will be rare scenes now, with the removal of restriction on interstate travels as well as overseas travel. Earlier, the government had also relaxed travel blocks between districts. However, the remaining SOPs must be adhered to, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob in a special livestreamed address on Sunday, Oct 10.

PUTRAJAYA, Oct 10 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob today announced that interstate travel in Malaysia will be allowed effective tomorrow, Monday Oct 11.

In a special address today, the Prime Minister said that this follows the achievement of 90 percent vaccination for the adult population in Malaysia

Reminding the people to still adhere to the standard operating procedures, he also said the interstate travel will only apply to those who have completed their two doses of vaccination.

He said with the block on interstate travel lifted, the tourism sector will now re-open and Malaysians can now also visit their families and so on.

While there will be no pandemic-dedicated road-blocks, police blocks will still continue to be there for security purposes or other routine checks on random basis to ensure compliance with the SOPs.

He also announced that Malaysians will no longer require the MyTravel Pass to go overseas effective Monday, Oct 11. This also applies to those who have been fully vaccinated.

However, the country’s borders will remain closed to tourists from overseas for now, he said. Except for those coming for special reasons, tourists are still not allowed in the country, he said.

Travel is also still restricted to areas under the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO).

Malaysia began its first lockdown in March to May last year as the Covid-19 virus hit the country and the Movement Control Order was put in place. This was followed by further lockdowns in between following a rise in Covid-19 cases up till the government started its National Recovery Plan to move the country into the endemic phase.

As vaccinations rate went up nationwide, the states were put under Phase 1 to Phase 4 depending on their Covid-19 situation.

As the threat of the virus remains, people would have take the necessary precaution and follow the SOPs and learn to live with the virus.

The prime minister in his address today, also cautioned the people to follow the SOPs and follow the rules of quarantine or getting medical care in the event they suspect of being infected with the virus.
