Indian PM reviews COVID-19 related initiatives by Navy

NEW DELHI, May 3 – The Chief of Indian Navy today briefed India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the initiatives being taken by the navy to assist in the fight against the COVID-19.

Naval Staff Admiral Karambir Singh said the Indian Navy has reached out to all state administrations and have offered help in terms of hospital beds and transportation.

He apprised the PM about Naval hospitals being opened for use of civilians in various cities, a press statement from the Press Information Bureau of India said.

Among other things, medical personnel in the Navy have been also redeployed at various locations in the country to manage with the pandemic situation. The navy personnel have also taken on Battle Field Nursing Assistant Training to be deployed for Covid duties.

Karambir Singh also informed Modi that the naval force has been helping with increasing oxygen availability in Lakshadweep as well as in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The Indian Navy has been also transporting oxygen containers as well as other supplies from Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and Singapore to India.

Meanwhile, PIB in an earlier press statement said more than 16 million Indians have already been vaccinated. A total of 368,147 new cases were also reported, bringing the total number of cases to 19, 925,604. The total number of recoveries also went up by 300,732 to 16,293,003.
