Historians’ Council Says Public Statements on History Must be Backed by Accurate References

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 15: The National Historians Council (MSjN) has called on the public to be more sensitive, ethical, and not to rush into issuing or disseminating statements related to history without accurate references.

In a statement today, MSjN stressed that the dissemination of unfounded information has the potential to be misleading and affect public understanding of the country’s history.

According to MSjN, history is not a personal view or independent narrative, but rather a discipline of knowledge based on specific research methodologies, the use of authoritative sources, authentic facts and critical evaluation based on scientific methods.

“MSjN views seriously the spread of various allegations, interpretations and views related to historical issues in the public sphere, especially on social media.

“Any statement or interpretation related to history must be presented in a prudent, responsible and based on a valid scholarly framework,” the body said.

In an effort to strengthen the understanding of history among the public, MSjN, through the Ministry of National Unity and the National Archives, is formulating strategic initiatives and new approaches to strengthen history as a discipline of knowledge based on facts, critical thinking and scholarly discourse.

“MSjN remains committed to preserving the integrity of history as the core of building identity and the nation, in addition to strengthening the culture of knowledge, critical thinking and respect for historical facts for the sake of education, social harmony, national unity and national survival,” it said.
