Hey, you’re driving the wrong way – elderly woman drives Proton X50 on motorcycle lane of 2nd Penang Bridge!

KUALA LUMPUR, June 22: Police in Penang have detained a 70-year-old woman for driving a car in the motorcycle lane on the Penang “Second Bridge” or Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Bridge (JSAHMS), and their counterparts in Johor are investigating a Singapore-registered vehicle travelling against traffic at KM 55 of the Senai–Desaru Expressway yesterday.

Seberang Perai Selatan (SPS) Police Chief Supt Jay January Siowou said preliminary police investigations found that the bridge incident occurred at KM 8.6 of JSAHMS from Batu Kawan heading towards Batu Maung, at around 1.30 pm.

A six-second video went viral on social media showing the woman driving a Proton X50 on the motorcycle lane on the bridge.

“Acting on information, the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the SPS District Police Headquarters (IPD) managed to identify the 70-year-old female driver and brought her to the SPS IPD for further action.

“The police have also opened an investigation paper for driving in a prohibited lane, and further investigation is underway,” he said in a statement.

Members of the public with additional information on the incident are urged to contact the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the SPS IPD at 04-5858222 to assist with the investigation.

Meanwhile, Kota Tinggi police chief Supt Yusof Othman said that the incident involving the Singapore vehicle is believed to have occurred at around 11.31 am on Saturday.

A 12-second video was subsequently uploaded to the ‘Community Roda Johor’ Facebook page.

“The white-coloured vehicle with the registration number SNT4298 was recorded driving against the traffic, endangering other road users,” he said in a statement, adding that the case was being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving.
