KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 (Bernama) — Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HCTM-UKM) is set to make history as the first institution in the country to offer Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery as a day-care procedure.
HCTM Corporate Communications Department said the implementation of the ACL reconstruction surgery day-care procedure marks a significant advancement in the field of patient-centred healthcare.
It added that the Sports Injury and Arthroscopic Unit of HCTM’s Orthopaedic and Traumatology Department will carry out the ACL reconstruction surgery on two patients slated to undergo the procedure on Monday (June 30).
HCTM-UKM said the two surgeons who will be performing the procedure are Assoc Prof Datuk Dr Badrul Akmal Hisham Md Yusoff and Dr Muhamad Karbela Reza Ramlan.
“ACL reconstruction surgery is a procedure to restore knee stability by using a graft to replace the torn ligament.
“The surgical team will use the Modified UKM Internal Bracing (MUIB) technique, which has been proven to increase graft protection and stability during recovery and, as such, this approach also accelerates rehabilitation time and allows patients to return to their daily activities much sooner,” it said in a statement today.
Traditionally, ACL reconstructive surgery requires patients to be warded for a few days for post-surgery monitoring.
However, with advancements in surgical techniques, modern anaesthesia methods and more efficient post-surgery management, the procedure can now be performed as a day-care treatment, it said.
“Through this approach, patients only need to rest for a few hours in hospital before being discharged on the same day.
“This initiative not only reduces time spent in hospital and treatment costs but also minimises the risk of hospital infections and speeds up the overall recovery process,” it added.
