NEW DELHI, Sept 12 (Bernama) — A former chief justice of the Supreme Court has been named Nepal’s new prime minister as the nation of 30 million tries to attain normalcy after days of violent anti-government protests.

Sushila Karki, 73, was appointed as interim prime minister on Friday by President Ram Chandra Poudel, as she was found acceptable to the youth-led protest movement.

Karki in 2016 became the first woman chief justice in Nepal’s history.

Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, suffered heavy arson and vandalism in recent days as the protests turned violent on Monday after about 20 protesters were killed in clashes with police.
