KUALA LUMPUR, July 21: The families of several men detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (SOSMA), today handed over a memorandum to Selayang Member of Parliament William Leong, seeking some certainty in the fate of the detainees who have been held since May 2024 and are expected to go on trial only in October 2026.
One family member said that they were not seeking to disregard any punishment due to the crimes done by the detainees. “The charges are still not clear to family members and what we are appealing for is a more humane resolution for the detainees than being detained without a trial for more than two years.”
The group had gathered close to the Parliament grounds as early as 7am to hand over the memorandum. According to one of the participants, they had also waited for several other Members of Parliament for support but “they did not turn up.”
