KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 – A successful entrepreneur, former broadcast journalist, actor and a social media influencer, Nehsan Selvaraj has been there, done that and continues to pull out more tricks from his bag of surprises – the latest being his upcoming “Classical Connection,” an Indian classical/fusion musical concert with him leading the vocals.

“Classical music has always had a special place in my heart,” said Nehsan, who received his training in Carnatic music from Renjini Gopinath from Kerala, India.

Nehsan, whose father is also a classical singer, currently also trains with Navneeth Varma, from Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

“From Chinnanchiru Kiliye, Enna Thavam to Minsara Kanna, Mere Dolna Sun (all titles of modern Tamil/Hindi cinema songs with their core set in classical tunes), we hope to provide to an extraordinary musical experience with talented artists from Malaysia, Dubai and India performing at the event,” Nehsan said.

One of the reasons for undertaking the musical event, set for this Saturday, July 30, is to also encourage more youngsters to have an appreciation for classical music, and the essence and connection they give to modern songs, said Nehsan.

“When it comes to classical music or Carnatic music, people always say it is too tedious and a waste of time. Many are also unaware that a good number of cinema songs are composed by famous composers based on the many beautiful raagam or melodic patterns in Indian classical music.”

Both pure classical songs as well as a fusion of classical pieces will be rendered at the concert, and among the songs featured will be from the legendary Mahakavi Subramaniya Bharathiyar, Muthuswami Dikshitar, Otthukaadu Venkata Kavi, Papanasam Ramayyaya Sivam as well as the modern works from AR Rahman, Pritam, Ilaiyara, Viswanathan Ramamoorthy and Madan Mohan.

Nehsan will be accompanied by Jayaram Iyer from Dubai on the mridangam and Cherthala C S Syam from Kerala, India on the violin.

Classical Connection will be held at the Experimental Theatre, University Malaysia on Saturday, July 30, starting at 7.30 pm.
