BUKIT MERTAJAM, Oct 10: An elderly man was injured after a crane toppled over and crashed onto the roof of a dormitory building of an elderly care centre in Permatang Tinggi here today.
Penang Fire and Rescue Department Firefighting and Rescue Operations Division assistant director John Sagun Francis said five firefighters were dispatched to the location from the Bukit Mertajam Fire and Rescue Station after they received a distress call at 12.38 pm.
“The crash is believed to have happened when the crane, which was parked on an uneven surface, lost stability and toppled over, crashing onto the roof of the dormitory building.
“The man, 84, suffered injuries to his head and was taken to the hospital by health officers before the firefighters arrived at the scene,” he said in a statement today.
No other casualties were reported, he said, adding that firefighters inspected the scene to ensure it was safe and set up a perimeter to keep civilians out of the restricted area, with operations ending at 1.45 pm.
