KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 – The Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) and the Weekly Echo news portal have signed two memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with The Standard newspaper of Hong Kong to promote journalistic excellence, facilitate professional exchange, and strengthen media ties between Hong Kong and Malaysia.
The signing ceremony was witnessed by Malaysia’s Transport Minister Anthony Loke and Hong Kong’s Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Algernon Yau Ying-wah. It formed part of eight MoUs and cooperation agreements inked between Malaysian and Hong Kong entities during Yau’s official visit to Kuala Lumpur for the “Think Business, Think Hong Kong” Symposium.
Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the symposium showcased Hong Kong’s latest advantages to the Malaysian business community. It highlighted opportunities to leverage Hong Kong as a gateway to the mainland, ASEAN, and global markets.
Ronald Yam Chin-hing, general manager of The Standard under Sing Tao News Corporation, signed on behalf of the Hong Kong daily, while Datuk Yong Soo Heong, president of MPI, signed for the institute, a premier journalism training body in Malaysia.
The MoU between MPI and The Standard is expected to deepen the exchange of editorial expertise, encourage knowledge sharing on digital media transformation and multi-platform strategies, and foster collaboration through joint training programmes, workshops, and seminars. It will also explore applications of artificial intelligence in media and other content initiatives.
Separately, Yam and Weekly Echo’s editor-in-chief, Datuk Yong Soo Heong, signed another MoU covering collaboration across both media platforms. The partnership will explore opportunities for content exchange and cross-border reporting, promote digital media innovation, and enhance visibility in both Hong Kong and Malaysian markets
